UNPACKING COMMAND WORDS


The attached document appears in the updated Teaching and Learning Guide. It gives teachers good advice about how to unpack command words such as explain and fully explain.

GENERAL



Command words (academic language) of Business Studies. The following document is for teacher use. Use the tick box table to identify the relevant level (such as Level 1). Then, omit the irrelevant words/definitions from the Student Use document before giving it to students.


The next document is for student use (with modification as explained above). You may wish to slice up the items, muddle them all up, place in an envelope and have students (perhaps in pairs) match the command with its definition.
Students can also refer to the page for guidance when working through the Cake powerpoint.

The Asia:NZ Foundation website has NCEA teaching and learning resources in a number of subject areas to encourage the use of Asian contexts in teaching and learning. These resources are all aligned to the NZC. The Level 1 Business Studies resource provides a comprehensive coverage of the Marketing Mix focussing on exporting to Asia. There are 21 sections so make sure you view all of them. Level 2 Business Studies is in the pipeline. The Asia in the curriculum section of the website includes some classroom activities for Level 7 and 8 of the Business Studies curriculum. It is suggested that these may also be useful as extension activities for Level 1.

It is ideal for Level 2 where students need to be familiar with all of five of the Maori concepts for the external papers. Note that when Kylie produced this booklet Putake had not be flagged in the Curriculum Guide as one of the concepts so treatment in the booklet is light. Online Communities


Hillary Mann of Longbay College has created a Google Group for teachers of Business Studies to converse and share. People will need to sign in to Google (ie gmail, google docs) and then be able to request to join the group. Any problems, they can email Hillary at hmann@lbc.school.nz and she will invite you to join.
Business Google Group

Another important online community for Business Studies teachers is the Facebook page ~ NCEA Business Studies teachers. Many teachers don't do Facebook and don't wish to. Their choice, of course, but it is an opportunity to benefit from the discussion and the sharing of teachers' files and ideas. You might already have a personal profile on Facebook that is attached to your personal email address. For the purpose of this group you might wish to create a completely blank profile attached to another email, with no photos and no friends. That way, postings on your personal page do not show up on the Business Studies page, and vice versa. You can join the group by logging on, doing a search for NCEA Business Studies Teachers and sending a friend request; alternatively, email Sue McVeigh who can invite you to join.

Not a community perhaps, but NZQA is also on Facebook. Search for NZQA Business Studies and click on "like" to be notified of updates such as clarification documents.

Note the information about Maori concepts:
A specific Māori concept relating to business, Rangatiratanga, will be examined in 2013. The overarching principals and concepts of Rangatiratanga are exercise of leadership, authority, guardianship and ownership rights – particularly focused on resource production, utilisation and management for current and future requirements. This includes strategic development and oversight, relationship development and maintenance, problem-solving, conflict resolution and peace-making, adaptation, risk analysis and management. See the Māori Culture and values in business section of the Teaching and Learning Guidelines for Business Studies.

Specifications
A specific Māori concept relating to business, Pūtake, will be examined in 2013. Pūtake: The origin or reason for being – Every business has a reason for being. Many Māori businesses exist for the same reason as other businesses; that is, they are there to provide goods or services at a
profit and to enrich the business owner(s). A significant number, however, have very different reasons for being – reasons that are associated with collectively-owned resources (such as land, tribal estates) and / or whakapapa-based groupings, such as whānau, hapū and iwi. Such businesses can encounter legal, cultural, and business complexities that are not experienced by mainstream businesses.
Further guidance can be found in the Māori Culture and values in business section of the Teaching and Learning Guidelines for Business Studies.


Teaching Notes/Presentations for Level 3 externals
The following documents and presentations have been prepared to assist teachers deliver the "content" of the L3 externals. While they are in a "ready to go" format (photocopiable Word notes or PPT presentations) they will not suit all classes in all schools. Teachers MUST modify the notes to suit their classes. For example, the notes may be too wordy.
These represent Sue McVeigh's interpretation of the L3 topics and sub-topics from the Curriculum Guide; there is no guarantee that Sue's interpretation is 100% accurate. The idea in creating these was to save teachers time so they may put their energies into creating teaching and learning ACTIVITIES, and locating relevant case studies, to bring the "content" to life.
